In simple terms, yoga is an Ancient system from India for bringing balance into your body and mind. It involves personal values and ethics, physical postures called asanas, breathing exercises called pranayama and meditation, self-enquiry and philosophy. Yoga in the modern world tends to focus mostly on the physical practice – the yoga poses. This is a great place to start but there is so much more to learn about yourself with a consistent yoga practice - this is where you'll make all the difference. The word Yoga is derived from the Sanskrit root 'Yuj' meaning to 'Yoke' or 'to Join' or 'to Unite'. What are we uniting? Our true selves with the divine within us.
So many things! Balanced health and increased vitality, strength, mobility, less stress, and a calm mind (our true, clear nature) and nervous system. You'll learn how to be more mindful in your life as you support your awareness of yourself the world around you. With a dedicated practice, you can live well - this is a wonderful effect of Yoga. You be less affected by things as you learn to manage your own energy and move along the continuum of healing.
Ayurveda is a natural system of health and healing. It offers overarching principles of matter, energy, nature, and the relationships of all things, as well as specific guidelines for preventing and managing human health. Ayurveda translates to the “science of life,” and as part of the Vedas, its wisdom dates back over 5,000 years. Ayurveda, or Traditional Indian Medicine, is the oldest documented health care system in the world. Ayurveda is now practiced worldwide. It is the only medical system that focuses on the individual client’s unique physical, mental and spiritual constitution, with an emphasis on prevention. Ayurveda is most powerful when used side-by-side with Yoga. We approach Ayurveda and Yoga through the balance of the mind and body through lifestyle practices, natural therapies, and herbal remedies.
Modern medicine and consumerism train us not to make connections between what we are doing and the results we experience. This leads to not being responsible for ourselves and giving up our power to someone else. This breeds discontent. Ayurveda brings the power back into the hands of the individual, inviting us to take responsibility for our health and wellbeing. The practices of Ayurveda allow us to be in life in the fullest way possible. We look at the whole person including body, mind and spirit. There is no focus on the disease or disorder. The focus is on the balance and holistic wellbeing of the entire person including body, mind and spirit.

We provide feedback and guidance in classes. It's important to remember we are all very different so there isn’t just one ‘right’ way to do a pose. It’s about finding out what works for your body. The main thing to know is that yoga is not meant to hurt – that goes for whether you’re at practicing yoga at home on your own or in a class with a teacher. You will probably experience different sensations than you’re used to, and you may feel your muscles working, but if you feel any type of “warning” pain, such as sharpness or pinching, listen to your body and come slowly out of the pose.
Our studio is intimate and a shared space with Rogue BJJ Canberra and Mike Armstrong Art. We can accommodate up to 16 students per yoga class and 10 in a workshop. That's proabbly less than what you may be used to, so we recommend booking your mat a few days in advance to secure your spot.
